Bicycle courier service in the Canton of Bern

Our workplace is the roads in and around the city of Bern. We deliver all kinds of things, from an express delivery of a forgotten front-door key to regular large deliveries for lunchtime meals at a day care centre. We all work part-time from Monday to Saturday, with a combined workload equivalent to 120% of a full-time position. As a collective, we are united by our enthusiasm for cycling and our commitment to our staff, safety and health. Our biggest challenge is dealing with time pressure. There are also the hazards of road traffic, particularly when riding a cargo bike.

Ensuring a safe start

A fully loaded cargo bike handles differently from a conventional bicycle. That is why we allow enough time to train new staff so that they can ride safely in traffic from the outset. For example, they first take the unfamiliar vehicle for a test ride. From the very first ride, we all wear a certified cycling helmet, cycling shorts and closed-toe shoes as a matter of course. We also take seasonal conditions into account. In summer, for example, our equipment includes sunscreen, a full water bottle and our cap worn under the helmet for sun protection.
To reduce the initial pressure, we assign new team members easier jobs without tight deadlines. They should be able to load and ride their bike without rushing. We also make sure that experienced couriers can be reached immediately and at any time during their first assignments. Knowing that they are not entirely on their own reduces the stress experienced by newcomers.

Reducing pressure through support

In our day-to-day work, intense time pressure is the greatest risk factor for road safety and our health. To reduce it, a second person remains on standby while the first person works their shift. As soon as the volume of orders becomes too high, the first person can quickly ask for support and complete the orders together with the second person.

With growing experience, you also learn to judge more effectively what matters at that moment and what can wait. Concentrating on the road is always the highest priority, even in stressful situations. We therefore let the phone ring while riding and call back as soon as possible.

Two bicycle couriers wearing helmets load three large cargo bikes with moving boxes and prepare to set off in front of the entrance to an apartment building, where a large bundled mattress is still waiting to be collected.
Heavy goods are challenging for bicycle couriers. They first need to load the goods onto the cargo bikes in a way that protects their backs, distribute the load evenly to maintain good balance on the bike, and check that everything is securely fastened before setting off.

Handling heavy goods correctly

Our team knows how to minimise physical strain: lift loads using the legs while keeping the back straight, and do short stretching exercises before the shift begins. We use our trolley to move heavy goods as close to the bike as possible. This allows us to avoid strenuous carrying wherever possible and to protect our backs. Fortunately, our customers are very helpful when their deliveries are unloaded. It really is worth simply asking for help instead of overexerting yourself.

Keeping bicycles safe over time

The equipment, as well as the body, must withstand heavy loads, which is why regular brake maintenance is particularly important for safety. Before setting off, we also perform a quick three-point check. We make sure that the load is properly secured, the handlebars are firmly tightened and the brakes are working. This brief check before departure helps prevent dangerous situations on the cargo bike.

Shared responsibility within the team

At regular check-ins, everyone can speak openly about what is causing them difficulty. As a team, we support one another, so someone can also swap a shift for personal reasons. This prevents the work from becoming overwhelming, even during stressful periods in our lives. After all, we all want to keep zipping safely and healthily through Bern for a long time to come.
